Egg Roll Dipping Sauce

I love this egg roll dipping sauce because it takes a handful of pantry ingredients and turns them into something that makes the whole plate feel more put together. It is sweet, tangy, savory, and the kind of sauce that instantly makes egg rolls, dumplings and potstickers more interesting.

Why You’ll Love This Egg Roll Dipping Sauce
  • More elevated than plain soy sauce. The rice vinegar, brown sugar, ginger, sesame oil and Worcestershire give it real depth, so it feels more like a restaurant-style dipping sauce than a last-minute condiment.
  • It comes together fast. This is the kind of sauce that makes a platter of egg rolls or dumplings feel much more intentional in just a few minutes.
  • It works for more than just egg rolls. Once you make it, you’ll realize it’s just as useful for dumplings, potstickers, gyoza, lettuce wraps, and even as a drizzle for stir fry bowls.

Ingredients for Egg Roll Dipping Sauce

These basic ingredients come together for an incredible sauce you’ll want to keep around on the regular. Most of them are easy to find at a local grocery store, but you can check an Asian market, too. A full list of ingredients with measurements for this recipe is available in the printable recipe card below.

  • Rice Wine Vinegar: The tangy and slightly sweet flavor of this vinegar balances the sauce with its acidity.
  • Cornstarch: This thickening agent gives the sauce a smooth consistency, which helps it cling to the egg roll.
  • Low Sodium Soy Sauce: Soy sauce imparts a savory, umami flavor that complements the egg roll.
  • Dark Brown Sugar: Sugar adds a touch of sweetness to the sauce.
  • Fresh Grated Ginger: Ginger brings zestiness and earthiness to the sauce.
  • Garlic Powder: Using powder makes it easier to ensure the garlic flavor is easily incorporated into the sauce.
  • Onion Powder: Onion powder is also ideal to evenly disperse the flavor.
  • Sesame Oil: Sesame oil provides nuttiness. If you don’t typically keep this oil around, consider it. It’s a great way to add extra flavor to lots of foods that are part of Asian cuisine and otherwise.

How to Make Egg Roll Dipping Sauce (Step-by-Step)

This sauce really is as simple as one, two three!

  1. Combine ingredients in saucepan. Add the rice wine vinegar and cornstarch to a cold small saucepan and whisk together until smooth.
  2. Simmer. Turn on the heat to the recommended temperature. Add the remaining ingredients and stir to combine. All the mixture to simmer briefly.
  3. Enjoy! Serve immediately or strain before serving.

Chef Tips

I’ve made this egg roll dipping sauce recipe in my test kitchen to be able to bring you these simple tips and tricks.

  • Whisk the cornstarch into vinegar before adding heat – This is the easiest way to keep the sauce smooth and avoid lumps.
  • Low sodium soy sauce – That gives you better control over the saltiness, especially since the sauce reduces slightly as it cooks.
  • Taste before serving – If you want it sweeter, add a little more brown sugar. If you want it tangier, a touch more vinegar works well.
  • Strain for a smoother finish – This is especially nice if you want the sauce to look more polished for serving.

This is amazing! I love that it’s thicker. I don’t like the thin sauces because they just make a big mess. Thanks for sharing!
